Research Areas

Wood Anatomy, Timber Identification, Wood quality evaluation (including Nondestructive testing) and Dendrochronology.

Specialisation

Wood Science

Description:

The core area of my research and teaching in Wood Science revolves around wood structure and in particular, the variation between taxa, species, provenances, between and within the trees itself interests me. Knowledge gathered is put to use in timber identification, quality evaluation etc. Advances in information technology is also made use of in these areas. Wood anatomy is also used and correlated with timber mechanical and physical properties in many of the research projects. Wood produced from tree improvement trials and silvicultural manipulations are tested for inferring quality implications and for understanding early gains from the trials. Research interest in Nondestructive testing of timbers using acoustics and pilodyn stems from the advantage this technology has in saving the material tested for future. Limited studies on dendroclimatology (tree ring versus climate) of teak has helped gain substantial knowledge on cambial activity of teak rings as well as help reconstruct climatic data of important teak areas in Thrissur and Nilambur. Presently, I am engaged in a technology and training project on value addition of coconut wood.
